KATERINA KOULI

Associate Professor of Palaeontology, Palaeobotany and Geoarchaeology

email

Katerina Kouli is a palynologist with expertise on the study of pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs from either terrestrial and marine deposits or archaeological contexts. Appointed to the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens since 2013, she is currently holding the position of Associate Professor of Palaeontology-Palaeobotany-Geoarchaeology. She holds a diploma (1994) and a PhD in Geology/Paleontology (2002). Her doctorate thesis deals with the evolution of the plant landscape and the land-use in the area of the Neolithic settlement of Dispilio (Lake Kastoria, N Greece).

She has participated in several research projects of both geological and archaeological interest including numerous archaeological excavations. She is member of the Independent Max Planck Research Group Palaeo-ScienceandHistory (PS&H)and of the IODP Exp. 381: Corinth Active Rift Development Science Party. Her research has been published in international scientific journals (52 in Scopus: h-index 23, 1400 citations, November 2022), including one Nature and one Nature ecology and evolution papers.

Research interests

  • Quaternary vegetation dynamics, vegetation response to climate change
  • Cultural and natural landscapes, pollen analysis of archaeological deposits, human impact on vegetation
  • Non Pollen Palynomorphs (NPPs) as palaeoecological indices
