MSc in Archaeological Science

The Laboratory of Mineralogy and Petrology (LMP) carries out projects related to basic and applied research including the development of applications connected to the geo‐environment and the industry of Greece.

The main activities of the LMP include sampling and processing of rocks and minerals, determination of the internal structure of minerals, qualitative and quantitative determination of chemical composition of minerals, rocks and sediments as well as chemical analysis of surface and underground fluids and gases. Determination of physical properties of geological samples such as crystal dimensions, shape, orientation, and intergrowth also take place. We determine technical properties of rocks and minerals and run gemmological analysis to examine the quality of precious and semiprecious stones.

The laboratory’s infrastructure is available for research activities and education of undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment and includes:

1. Equipment for sample preparation (rock cutting saw, lapping system, polishing system, rock jaw crusher, mortar grinder, ball mill, hydraulic press (25T) and pellets press)
2. Various bench top analytical instruments (pH‐meter, conductivity meter, colorimeter, micro‐hardness tester)
3. X‐Ray Diffractometer
4. X‐Ray Fluorescence – ED, X‐Ray Fluorescence – WD
5. Direct Current Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer
6. Poralizing microscope and digital camera
7. Dark room for chemical preparation, (OSL, Optically‐ (infrared‐light) Stimulated Luminescence).
